TEMPO.CO, New Delhi - The Indonesian female badminton team was eliminated of the Uber Cup championship after suffering a 3-0 defeat from host nation India in New Delhi.
This year’s defeat marked the second failure of the Indonesian women’s team in the quarterfinal after the previous one in Wuhan, China, in 2012, when Japanese female shuttlers crushed them in a tight 2-3 match.
Playing at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, New Delhi, Indonesia’ female shuttlers lost the first game when Lindaweni was defeated by India’s Saina Nehwal in straight sets with 17-21, 10-21.
In the next match, Indonesian shuttler Bellaetrix Manuputty was beaten by Pusarla Venkata Sindhu in rubber sets with 21-16, 10-21, 25-23. The Indian shuttlers sealed their victory after couple Jwalla Gutta-Ashwini Ponnapa trounced Greysia Polii-Nitya Maheswari in straight sets with 21-18 and 21-18.
With this victory, India proceeds to the Uber semifinal for the first time in its badminton history. Their previous highest achievement in the Uber Cup was reaching the quarterfinal in 2010.
