TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- The Indonesian Badminton Association Central Board (PP PBSI) has selected 20 shuttlers for the Indonesian team vying in the 2014 Thomas and Uber Cup. The list was sent to journalists by e-mail on Wednesday night, April 30, 2014.
The world's most prestigious badminton tournament will be held in New Delhi, India, from May 18-25. The Thomas team will be in Group A with Thailand, Nigeria and Singapore, while the Uber team is slotted in Group B with South Korea, Australia, and Singapore.
“We have chosen the players and formed the best team,” said Thomas team manager Christian Hadinata, who aimed at bringing the Thomas Cup to the country. “All players are good. But due to the limited quota, we could only choose 10 players.”
The youngest Thomas Cup shuttler is Ihsan Maulana Mustofa, who is still under the age of 19. Simon Santoso, who has shown an excellent achievement upon completing his training at the national training camp (Pelatnas), has also been selected for the Thomas Cup primary team.
A number of female shuttlers who no longer train at the Pelatnas have also been selected to join the Uber Cup team, such as Ardiyanti Firdasari, Pia Zebadiah Bernadet and Rizki Amelia Pradipta. “This is the team with the best player composition. We need the prayers and support of Indonesians for the Uber Cup team,” said Uber team manager Imelda Wiguna.
