TEMPO.CO, Kabul - Three American doctors were killed by a security guard in an international hospital in Afghanistan. "Five doctors had entered the compound of the hospital and were walking toward the building when the guard opened fire on them," Health Ministry spokesman Bektash Torkystani told the press.
"Three foreign doctors were killed and two other doctors were wounded," Bektash added.
District police chief Hafiz Khan said that the guard opened fire on Thursday morning, April 24, 2014, at Kabul's Cure International Hospital. He said that the attacker was a member of the Afghan Police Protection Force who was assigned to guard the hospital.
A fellow police officer responded with fire, wounding the attacker.
The United States embassy later confirmed that the three doctors were US citizens, but said it would wait until the families had been notified before releasing their identities.
