TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Democrat Party’s convention committee is planning to hold a public test for its 11 presidential primary participants on Sunday, April 27, 2014.
“The convention participants will engage in an open debate,” convention secretary Suaedi Marasabessi said on Thursday, April 24, 2014.
In addition to a survey of the 11 convention participants, the Democrat will also evaluate the electability of other presidential candidates, including Joko Widodo, Prabowo Subianto and Aburizal Bakrie.
“We will find out whether the participants can compete with other presidential candidates,” Suaedi said.
Suaedi explained the Democrat will use the survey results a reference to determine their strategies in the presidential election. Currently, the party is considering three big scenarios, including joining a coalition, establishing a new political axis, or becoming an opposition party.
Based on the results of multiple quick counts run by a number of pollsters, the Democrat will likely garner 10 percent of the total votes. Thus, according to Suaedi, the party still has a chance to build a coalition.
Hanta Yuda, a political analyst with the Pol Tracking Institute, said a number of Islamic-based parties such as the United Development Party (PPP), the National Mandate Party (PAN) and the National Awakening Party (PKB) would likely join the Democrat if it opted to nominate its own presidential hopeful.
