TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - It appears that Indonesian halal products are popular overseas; one of them is in Malaysia. During the 2014 Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) that took place on April 9 to 12 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the total sales of Indonesian halal products were Rp22.1 billion.
Malaysian retail companies are more interested in looking for Indonesian halal products to be placed on special counters. According to the Trade Ministry's director general for national export development, Nus Nuzulia Ishak, cosmetic products and local Muslim clothing have even attracted Parkson’s attention, one of the biggest shopping centers in Malaysia.
"Those products could be suitable for Parkson’s plan to expand the market for Muslim consumers," he said in a press release, Saturday, April 19.
Nus said that Indonesia’s achievement at the showcase indicates the country opportunities to penetrate to a bigger market in Malaysia. In 2013, Indonesian food products in Malaysia had reached 14.64 percent with the export value of US$421.79 million.
Although the amount had increased by 15.45 percent per year, halal products were merely 4.67 percent from the total Indonesian exports to Malaysia that had reached US$9 billion. "There is still a fairly big chance for improvement," stated Nus.
