South Jakarta Faces TPS Crisis

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Jakarta is now grappling with piles of garbage due to the lack of garbage disposal facilities (TPS) provided by the government to temporarily dispose the garbage.

Based on Tempo's observation, piles of garbage were found in areas around Jl. Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta. The piles, which occupy an area of 4 x 3 meters, were found near Pasar Minggu station and another one, which is almost 2-meter high, located near Tanjung Barat station.

The piles of garbage were not only found in Pasar Minggu area but also along railway up to Lenteng Agung station. Meanwhile, on Jl. Lontar, piles of garbage were even higher.

"The TPS here is legal but the problem is almost all residents in the district dump the garbage here," said Sasno (32), a sanitary officer in Lenteng Agung, Saturday. Ideally, he said that every sub-district has its own TPS.

"So not all garbage will be piled up here. With this condition, the residents will surely object."

In the meantime, Lenteng Agung sub-district head, Susan Jasmine Zulkifli, confirmed to have received reports from residents about the condition.

"However, we haven’t received any response from the Sanitary Agency," she said, adding that the residents complained about the piles of garbage from other regions and the slow garbage collection to the final waste disposal site (TPA).
