TEMPO.CO, Surabaya - Surabaya mayor, Tri Rismaharini, said the verification process of the sex workers in Dolly has been done. "In June, before the fasting month, we can ensure that Dolly will be closed," she told the journalists yesterday.
According to Risma, she has also proposed a rehabilitation budget to the Social Affairs Ministry. As of now, at least 375 sex workers have been verified for the rehabilitation program in the form of skill training and provision of incentives. Risma said the sex workers would be given a rehabilitation fund of Rp7 million.
"As for the pimps, they are the responsibility of the provincial government." Asked about the mechanism of the closing of the area, Risma said the area would be prohibited to be used as a prostitution place. However, she asserted that the government would not demolish the houses in the district.
"We only ban prostitutions in the area, according to the regional law number 7 of 1999. We won’t tear down the houses because they belong to the local residents," she said.
The mayor has also guaranteed that there will be no more prostitutions in the region after the closing down since city officials would continue to monitor the area.
She also expressed her optimism that Surabaya would be free from prostitutions and claimed that she received supports to close down all red-districts in the city, including Dolly.
