TEMPO.CO, Washington - United States Secretary of State John Kerry has urged the US military to be more aggressive in supporting rebel groups in Syria, a proposition not supported by the Pentagon.
Kerry and US ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power have proposed to conduct special training for rebel forces to enable them to make further advances on Bashar al-Assad's regime. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and the Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff Martin Dempsey, refused the initial request in a meeting at the White House.
The dispute between the two US institutions comes after three years of little action on the ever-worsening conflict aside from arming certain rebel groups.
