TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) II, through its subsidiary, Indonesia Kendaraan Terminal, plans to increase the capacity of its vehicle terminal at Tanjung Priok port. By 2018, the installed capacity of this terminal is expected to cover 62.5 hectares in area.
"The Tanjung Priok vehicle terminal will be the fifth largest in the world," said Armen Amir, Indonesia Kendaraan Terminal managing director, at Tanjung Priok on Monday, April 7, 2014.
Pelindo revealed the plan to increase the terminal's capacity during the visit of Trade Minister Muhammad Lutfi and Deputy Transportation Minister Bambang Susantono.
According to Armen, the terminal expansion was needed to increase the loading and unloading capacity of exported vehicles in Indonesia, a reflection of the market's confidence in the Indonesian automotive industry.
Meanwhile Lutfi estimated that the Indonesian automotive export will grow faster within the next few years. The increase in automotive export value is predicted to reach 100 percent in three years. "If the export is valued at US$ 4.5 billion now, in 2017, it may double to US$ 9 billion," Lutfi said.
Within the next couple of years, auto factories in Indonesia are planning to increase their production capacities. According to Lutfi, Toyota and Honda plan to double their export capacity. "Daihatsu will even triple it," he said, adding that was why he has called for the expansion of the port infrastructure.
