TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Anti-narcotics Agency (BNN) has revealed a number of drug trafficking cases involving Indonesian migrant workers (TKI), particularly females. BNN’s spokesperson Sr. Comr. Sumirat Dwiyanto said the international drug network was recruiting female migrant workers (locally called TKW) as drug traffickers to Indonesia.
“They were recruited because they don’t have money,” Sumirat said on Wednesday, April 2, 2014.
According to BNN investigators, migrant workers were easily tricked into smuggling drugs for financial reasons. The international drug mafia bought migrant workers’ necessities like cell-phones, gadgets, watches and rings. They also gave money to buy tickets to return to Indonesia.
Two migrant workers recently nabbed by the BNN have confirmed the method. MGR, 34, and MH, 31, were construction workers in Malaysia. They had to smuggle 7.3 kilograms of methamphetamine as they were out of money to return to Indonesia.
“We were willing to smuggle the drugs for US$1.250 and free tickets to Indonesia,” MGR said.
