TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- Indostrategis Research Institute has released the results of a recent research on the ideal vice president for three presidential candidates viz. Jokowi from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle [PDI-P], Prabowo Subianto from the Great Indonesia Party [Gerindra], and and Aburizal Bakrie from the Golkar Party.

According to the results, Jokowi-Gita Wirjawan is the most ideal pair among the others. “Jokowi needs a companion who boasts experiences in the national and international levels, especially in economy and trade. Gita has them all,” said Andar Nubowo, executive director of Indostrategis, on Wednesday.

Andar added both candidates would complement each other. He said Jokowi was a populist and solidarity-maker while Gita a professional and bureaucrat with international experiences and economic expertise. “Gita’s only weakness is that he doesn’t have a political base,” said Andar.  He addded a political base was crucial to secure support from the parliament for any leader.

He said Jokowi and Gita were both under 50-year-old, which would make them look appealing to young voters. Gita is placed second behind Jusuf Kalla as an ideal vice president and ahead of former Golkar chairman Akbar Tandjung.

The indicators used by this institution are political and international experiences, political bases, expertise in economic issues, international negotiation experiences, bureaucratic experiences, managerial ability, bravery, assertiveness, integrity, and anti-corruption commitment. This research was conducted from February 15 to March 2014.
