TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Puppeteer Asep Sunandar Sunarya, 59, who died in Al Ihsan Baleendah Hospital, Bandung, Sunday, was an icon of Giri Harja Art Village in Jelekong, Baleendah, Bandung, West Java.

"Abah Sunandar is one of the icons of Giri Harja Art Village and also a wayang golek icon," said Mumu Muchayat, one of Asep Sunandar Sunarya’s associates, Monday.

The village bred other puppeteers, like the late Ade Kosasih Sunarya, Iden Sunarya, Dadan Sunandar, Batara Sunandar and Adi Kontea Kosasih Sunarya. The village also gathered wayang golek creators whose products have reached the export markets.

Giri Harja Art Village is located in the northern part of Jelekong which holds pewayangan activities and occupancy altogether for known canvas artists in West Java.

Giri Harja Art Village is also a heaquarter for himpunan ketangkasan domba, where Asep Sunandar Sunarya is a fan and owner of domba ketangkasan.
