TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Venezuelan government has arrested three air force generals for allegedly organizing a coup against President Nicolas Maduro.
The three unnamed generals were apparently in contact with opposition politicians, who have grouped together in recent months to take on Maduro's increasingly unpopular government.
Maduro said in a meeting of South American foreign ministers on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, that "[the opposition] were trying to get the Air Force to rise up against the legitimately elected government."
"This group that was captured has direct links with sectors of the opposition and they were saying that this week was the decisive week," Maduro added.
Maduro explained that the generals have been summoned before a court martial. The plot was uncovered after a number of other officers came forward claiming that they were being recruited for the coup.
