Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia, Mari Elka Pangestu, during a press conference of Indonesia Pavilion Architecture Venice Biennale event, held at Galeri Tugu Kunstkrink, Jakarta (7/2). Special.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - 'Craftsmanship' becomes the theme that will be carried by the Indonesian Pavilion in the Architecture International Exhibition Venice Biennale in Arsenale, Venice, Italy which will be held for six months: June 14 - November 27.

The exhibition itself will be held with the theme of 'Fundamentals, Absorbing Modernity: 1914 – 2014.' The Biennale's main curator Rem Koolhass has asked all the participating countries, including Indonesia, to present the evolution of national architectures that is scraped by universal modern language of architecture.

The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu said at the press conference on Friday, that Indonesia has a long history in architecture and that the beauty of Borobudur and Prambanan temples are some of the examples.

According to Avianti Armand, one of the curator team in the first-ever Indonesian Pavilion in the Biennale, construction materials such as woods, stones, bricks, metals and bamboo influence the changes of tools, craftsmanship, style and technology around them. While glass is widely expressed in the modern architecture style, it has minor part in the development of 100-year of Indonesian architecture history. This becomes the reason why Indonesian curator team has decided to use such immaterial mediums, which are glass and films, as the mediums for delivering the message in the exhibition.

"This will be an interesting proportion and will give a special characteristic to Indonesian architecture. Glass has never been suitable to be used as dominant material in the tropical climate. So we will present glass as something that is not material," said Avianti Armand, one of the curators for Indonesian Pavilion in AIEVB 2014.

The Architecture International Exhibition Venice Biennale 2014 is a prestigious world class exhibition which has been held for 119 years and followed by architects from around the globe.
