TEMPO.CO, Dhaka - At least 21 demonstrators were killed in the violence that happened on Election day in Bangladesh, Sunday, January 5, 2014. That day security forces clashed with the opposition, who wanted to boycott the election. The protests, according to Bangladesh election officials, as quoted by India Times, caused the election to be postponed in nearly 400 locations.
In between the protests, the police said they were forced to unleash several shots in the direction of the protesters who were trying to steal and incinerate the election ballots. Several days before, on Saturday, more than 150 election locations, some at public schools, were incinerated by protesters and opposition activists. The largest opposition, the Bangladesh National Party, and its allies have gone on a two-day strike, on Saturday and Sunday. They are urging that the election should be annulled if it is not monitored by an independent team.
