Airplanes to Use Biofuel Soon

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director General of New and Renewable Energy of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Rida Mulyana and Director General of Air Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation, Herry Bakti on Friday, December 27, 2013, signed a memorandum of understanding on the use of biofuels for planes and renewable energy in a sustainable way at airports. The signing was witnessed by Minister of Transportation Evert Erenst Mangindaan and Minister of State-owned Enterprises at the office of the Ministry of Transportation, Jakarta.
"This is a measured initiative from both ministries as the continuation of their commitment to mitigate the impacts of climate change and green house effects. Biofuels are also expected to be much cheaper," said Mangindaan in his remarks.
The joint memorandum of understanding was the follow-up of the policies, strategies and measure of planning program actions to mitigate the green house effect conducted by the Ministry of Transportation stipulated in the decree of the Minister of Transportation Number 201 of 2013.
The decree was about the implementation of the aviation biofuel with the percentage of 2 percent in 2016 and the targeted percentage of 3 percent in 2020. Furthermore, the signing event also discussed the utilization of renewable energy by 7.5 megawatt at the airports until 2020.
The joint memorandum of understanding includes coordination with related institutions concerning research, development, tryout, preparation for certification and preparation for related regulations. In addition, it was expected that dissemination and supervision about the use of aviation biofuels to aircrafts and the use of renewable energy in a sustainable way in airports would be done.
