TEMPO.CO, Natuna - Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said that the government is planning to acquire more radars as the primary defense system of the Indonesian Air Force (AU). According to the Minister, the number of military-grade radars available in the eastern region of Indonesia today is not enough.
"We counted about 32 to 34 of new radars are needed in all regions of Indonesia," Purnomo said to reporters at the Lanai Airstrip in Natuna, Wednesday, October 30.
For the initial stage scheduled for 2009 to 2014 period, the Ministry of Defense is supposed to buy four units of new military-grade radars that costs US$150 million.
"In the meantime, to cover for the lack of military radars, we are cooperating with civilian radar networks in all over Indonesia," the Minister said.
He also informed that, in order to modernize the Indonesian National Army’s primary defense system, the Ministry of Defense will be focusing on the purchase of mobile weaponry, including fighter jets, transport aircrafts and helicopters.
