TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the President's Delivery Unit for Development Monitoring and Oversight (UKP4), Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, ensured work of the now defunct REDD+ Task Force, will be maintained by UKP4 until the new REDD+ Management Agency (1) is formed.

"Before the REDD+ Management Agency is completely formed, functions and duties of the Agency will be done by UKP4, in accordance with Presidential Decree number 62/2013," Kuntoro said in Jakarta Tuesday according to a release Tempo received. "It is important to keep the momentum of all of the work that has been initiated by the REDD+ Task Force, including good governance, transparency and accountability, and participation in managing REDD+ in a multi-sector context."

In this transition period, UKP4 will hold a series of workshops on REDD+ implementation in Indonesia, inviting various stakeholders to discuss a range of situation on the ground and the challenges and opportunities for REDD+ implementation and continuation.

Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan, who opened the workshop together with the Head of UKP4 REDD+, welcomes the soon to be staffed agency.

"We look forward to a productive partnership with this new agency, especially on MRV. The Ministry of Forestry’s task is so vast, so it is always better to work with more partners. The challenge going forward is how to implement this MRV, since this instrument has the potential to greatly assist us in carrying out various tasks from ecosystem restoration to monitor violations," he said in his opening speech.

The workshop is the first of a series of REDD+ Implementation Workshops held between October and December 2013. It focuses on implementation of REDD+ in Indonesia and the transition to the operations of the Management Board of REDD+ in Indonesia.

The first workshop was aimed to disseminate results that have been so far achieved by the REDD+ Task Force. It is expected that through this workshop stakeholders can get a better understanding of REDD+, particularly in the operationalization of the REDD+ Management Agency, the National Strategy and National Action Plan for REDD+, and Funding and MRV instruments.

The second series next month will be more focused on the moratorium and legal aspects of licensing and regulation, and in the last one in December, it is hoped that stakeholders will gain a common understanding of the REDD + Agency. (*)
