TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has acquired The Washington Post with US$250 million to save the newspaper from tight competition in internet era. The deal was made by Bezos alone, without any involvement from Amazon.
The Washington Post CEO Donald Graham responded positively to the acquisition. "Jeff Bezos' is a proven technology and business genius, his long-term approach and his personal decency make him a uniquely good new owner of the Post," Graham said.
Jeff is widely known to have an interest in journalism. Previously, he invested US$5 million in Business Insider and several other newspapers. He stated that he would work on the evolution of the company's newspaper publishing business, while still maintaining its values.
"I understand the critical role the Post plays in Washington, D.C., and our nation, and the Post's values will not change. Our duty to the readers will continue to be the heart of the Post, and I am very optimistic about the future," Jeff said.
The Washington Post gained its fame after it revealed the Watergate scandal, a scandal that leads to the resignation of US President Richard Nixon in 1974. However, in the last seven years, the newspaper's income continues to decrease.
