TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives (DPR) Chairman Marzuki Alie said the House is sending its members to Saudi Arabia to solve the problem of Indonesian Workers there (TKI). The House intends to monitor the document processing of the hundreds of thousands of workers who overstayed their work visas. .
"I might go there myself," Marzuki said at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Monday, July 22.
Marzuki said the government should take advantage of the time extension of the TKI's administrative process, which ends in November 3.
Marzuki criticizes the government for not doing the best in handling the administrative extension requirements for the workers. He said that government agencies are not collaborating well in dealing with the issues, especially when applying their programs. "There is plenty of miscommunication," he said.
The government is asked to guarantee the rights of migrant workers--the ones who want to go home and the ones who wish to extend their work visas. These rights include wages, repatriation insurance and insurance claims.
There is yet a fixed schedule for when the lawmakers will travel to Saudi Arabia. Marzuki said the House is still waiting for the government to overcome the problem of miscommunication between agencies.
"We are still waiting for an agreement between ministers," he said.
