TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Lava stream was visible from the Kaliurang observation post as Mount Merapi erupted earlier today at 04:22 to 05:35 a.m local time. The thick dark brownish haze was seen afloat in the sky along with reddish exploding materials, topping at 1,000 meters above the mount's crater, as reported by Selo Post, Boyolali.
Volcanic ashes and dirt rained along the way on several areas, including Deles, Tlogowatu, Kemalang, Balerante, and Klaten, Central Java Province. It also hit several areas in Yogyakarta like in Cangkringan and Sleman.
"The ashes was observed to reach 7 to 14 kilometers away from the crater heading to both Klaten and Sleman area," said Sutopo Purwo nugroho, the Head of Data and Information Center at National Disaster Management Agency.
Sutopo explained that volcanic activity can be categorized into four levels, in which Merapi is categorized as normal. Merapi also has a slow on set characteristic, which means that eruption will not occur suddnely but rather predictable.
