TEMPO.CO, Cirebon – Shallot price has experienced a significant increase of 30 percent in three days time. In Pasar Pagi, Cirebon, shallot is currently sold at Rp 40,000 )(around US$4.02) per kilogram, after previously sold at Rp 30,000 (around US$3.02) per kilogram earlier this week.
Ali Efendi, the Head of Cirebon Agriculture, Farming, and Forestry Department, confirmed the price hike, mentioning that it was because farmers tend to plant rice instead of shallot.
Farmers prefer to plant rice due to the increasing price of rice products caused by heavy downpour during the dry season. Moreover, the price incraese was mostly driven by increasing price of shallot seeds and production cost folowing the fuel price increase.
The abovementioned reasons resulted in the diminishing amount of shallot fields, only half the amount from a total of 4,000 hectares.
