Ramadan May Boost Crime Rate

TEMPO.CO, Makassar - Chief of public relations for the South and West Sulawesi Police Department, Sr. Comr. Endi Sutendi, has advised the community to be more aware because the rate of crime may increase during Ramadan. The police have already taken preventative measures in order to minimize disturbances and violations in the community.

Last year, police data showed that criminal acts doubled during Ramadan compared to regular days, such as thefts and mugging. Many criminals also go after empty homes, usually at night when Muslims are conducting theirtarawih prayers at the mosque.

South and West Sumatra Chief of Police Inspector General Burhanuddin Andi asked the people to coordinate with local neighborhood units (RT) and community units (RW) when they leave the house because criminals usually watch out for empty homes.
