TEMPO.CO, Washington DC - Last Thursday, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono received the 'World Statesman Award' from The Appeal of Conscience Foundation at Pierre Hotel, New York. The award was given to the President for his effort in promoting peace leading Indonesia to be democratic society.
After the receving the award, around 60 people welcome the President outside if the Hotel, waving the national flag while cheering. Although it may seems to be patriotic and heartwarming, a source from the crowds mentioned that they only did it because they were hired.
"We were paid US$ 100 per person," said a young man in the crowd. He also admitted that the crowds were accomodated with a pick up service to and from the front of the Hotel.
The young man also admitted that he has no information regarding the controversy surrounding the award.
In response to the issue, Michael Tenne, spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, firmly stated that the rumor was not true.
