Onion Import Restrictions to Be Reviewed
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Deputy Agriculture Minister Rusman Heriawan says he will review the garlic import restriction policy. The policy has been deemed responsible for the commodity’s climbing price, which has exceeded Rp40,000 per kilogram. We’ll review everything in the second semester,” said the deputy minister on Tuesday, March 5.
Rusmand added that the local garlic supply only covers 10 percent of the national demand. “With restrictions, who are we trying to protect?”
The government expects garlic prices to return to normal after the Recommendation for Imported Horticulture Products (RIPH) is issued. The Agriculture Ministry is currently reviewing import quota for each importer in order to meet the economic scale.
