Fighting Illegal Fishing in Sulawesi
TEMPO Interactive, Makassar:The South Sulawesi Marine and Fisheries Board is aiming to curb the illegal fihing rate by 15 percent this year.
“We want to achieve this target,” said the board’s law enforcement and management director in Makassar on Tuesday, March 5.
In 2012, the board recorded 14 cases of illegal fishing—much lower than 2011 figures of 54 cases, and 34 in 2010. The cases were categorized as illegal because the fishing activities were conducted without permits or the boat used did not have sailing permits. In addition, fisherman also used bombs and poison to fish. Areas that need most supervision include North Luwu district, Luwu, Makassar and Pangkep.
So far, the measures taken to curb illegal fishing have only involved a counseling program for fishermen, but the effort is considered ineffective. “We also conduct operations against illegal fishing every year,” said Khalik.
