NU Demands Tax Transparency
TEMPO Interactive, Cirebon:The National Conference on Muslim Scholars and the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) accused the government of being responsible for leaks and corruption involving taxpayers’ money. The management of taxes and the allocation of funds from taxes were not considered transparent enough. NU chairman Said Aqil Siraj delivered the message directly to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the Islamic boarding school in Kempek, Cirebon, on August 17 where the two conferences were held. In addition to demanding accountability and transparency, NU also asked most of the funds to be allocated for the people. So far, most of the taxpayers’ money is spent on paying the salaries of civil servants. Following the recommendation, NU will monitor the government's performance. If the government does not immediately take action on the two recommendations, then PBNU will consider releasing Muslims from the obligation to pay taxes. The President was also asked to be more firm against state officials involved in corruption. The two law enforcement agencies - the police and the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) - were considered not serious in working on corruption cases. This can be seen in their slow performance when processing corruption cases. "The president can indeed not intervene when a process has reached the court. But when it is still being handled by the police and prosecutors, the President can speed up the process. Up until today, it still takes the police and the AGO such a long time to process corruption cases causing people to become suspicious," said the Chairman of the Commission on the Recommendations by the Muslim Scholars Deliberations of NU, Masduki Baidlowi.
