Diversity Alliance Calls for Fatwa against Shia to be Dropped
TEMPO Interactive, Malang:The Malang Alliance for Diversity and Anti-Violence has urged the East Java Indonesia Ulema Council (MUI) to revoke a fatwa stating that Shia Muslims are misguided. The alliance believes the fatwa has triggered hatred toward certain groups and beliefs. “The fatwa has triggered violence,” said alliance coordinator Reymond Kamil on Wednesday, September 5. The alliance—comprised of academics, students and social activists—made the demand after a discussion on Kalimetro community studio. The activists said they were concerned that if the stigma is not dealt with, violence against Shiites such as the recent attack in Sampang would spread to other regions. “East Java has set an example. [Conflicts] may erupt in other places,” said Reymond. The activists also said they feared that violence and hatred was being directed toward other minority groups. EKO WIDIANTO
