KPPU: 80 percent of Project Tenders Problematic
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Commission for the Supervision of Business Competition (KPPU) suspects that most government project tenders are problematic.
"Around 80 percent of tenders are problematic," said commission chair Tadjudin Noer Said, in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The number was based on field investigations conducted at the city, town and district level.
However, Tadjudin declined to release the results of the investigation saying he was worried that if the data went public, people would judge the markets.
"Banks would not give loans, distributors would not sell goods and suppliers would not supply products," he said.
In the investigation, the KPPU requested data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) and directly interviewed parties related to the tenders in government agencies. However, he promised to keep the identity of the informants a secret.
Tadjudin maintains the KPPU is not a judicial institution that only provide verdicts, but was established to create a market with healthy business competition.
The KPPU is judged as successful not by the number of cases it resolves but by the manner it improves the market. JAYADI SUPRIADIN
