SBY Finally Opens Up on Bank Century Case
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono slammed fresh allegations made by former KPK chief and murder convict Antasari Azhar in regard to the Bank Century bailout case. In a speech broadcast live on television on Wednesday, President Yudhoyono denied the allegations, adding that the meeting Antasari had referred to – on Oct. 9, 2008 – did not discuss the issue of Bank Century.
“Please examine [the documents]. Can you find any words, or anything at all about Bank Century?” he said, adding that Antasari should not be spreading lies during the month of Ramadhan in particular.
The meeting at the Palace on October 9, 2008 was first revealed by former KPK chair Antasari Azhar, who is currently serving 18 years in prison for premeditated murder. He claims he was invited to a meeting at the Palace to discuss a rescue plan of the bank. Antasari’s testimony has led to speculations that since the beginning SBY has been meaning to bail out the ailing bank.
A number of ministers and leaders who Antasari claimed to be at the meeting have denied the testimony that was announced in the mass media. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, who in 2008 served as Minister-State Secretary Hatta Radjasa, assured that the October 2008 meeting did not discuss Bank Century. "The Century problem did not surface until November," said Hatta at the President's office, Monday, August 13, 2012. PRIHANDOKO
