"If land acquisition for Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, is not completed by 2015, the new airport will be built on Perhutani land in Karawang," said the director of airport transportation at the Transportation Ministry Bambang Cahyono after the groundbreaking ceremony at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta on Thursday. The Karawang option, according to Bambang, is a result of a study by the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA). "The land is most fitting and is located to the east of Jakarta, in Karawang, to be exact," he said. Initially the north runway was planned to be built on land belonging to the people and has not yet been fully acquired. However, the Transportation Ministry and PT Angkasa Pura II, as the manager of Soekarno-Hatta Airport, will continue its efforts to acquire it by negotiating with the residents and relocating those who are ready to give up their homes for a certain amount of compensation. "If there is no agreement until 2015, we will shift the location of the airport to the east of Jakarta. This is based on a study of seven places. Or we can wait for the termination of the contract on Soewarna golf course to expire in 2019," said Bambang. Bambang said that airports abroad are not centralized.
