Soekarno-Hatta Airport to be “Future-Proofed” for 20 years
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The current expansion of Soekarno-Hatta international airport will boost its capacity and enable it to accommodate increased number of passengers and planes for the next 20 years, according to an airport operator. The president director of state-owned airport management company PT Angkasa Pura II, Tri S Sunoko, said here on Thursday that the expansion plan was in line with the transportation minister's decree number KM 48/2008. "The airport expansion project is a major part of the government's efforts to overcome transportation problems relating to capacity, accessibility and connectivity, as well as environmental aspects," he added. Based on Airports Council International (ACI) data, Soekarno-Hatta international airport is the world 12th busiest airport, with annual passenger traffic reaching 52 million. "Moreover, it has been predicted that passenger and airplane traffic in the Asia-Pacific zone during the 2020-2030 period will be more that of Europe and the United States," Sunoko stated. He said the expansion and renovation of Soekarno-Hatta international airport would be made in light of a 4.1-5.7 percent annual increase in the number of flights in the Asia-Pacific region over the next 20 years.
