Jokowi-Ahok’s Popularity Strong Despite Racial Slurs
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:With the second round of the Jakarta gubernatorial election approaching, racial slurs against the Joko Widodo-Basuki Tjahaja Purnama duo are emerging. However, the issue does not seem to be affecting their popularity. A poll conducted on Tempo.co and Yahoo! readers from July 18 to 25 shows that the majority of readers do not think the issue will lower Jokowi-Ahok’s support base. The poll results can be seen in the Monday July 30th edition of Tempo. Of the 1,768 Tempo.co respondents, 89.7 percent said that support for the duo would remain robust, as did 84.48 percent of Yahoo! Readers. Jokowi and Ahok have been accused of not being Muslim and have also been criticized for receiving $US70 million in aid from church groups abroad. RINA WIDIASTUTI
