Ayin’s Coal Shed Accused of Environmental Damage
TEMPO Interactive, Bandar Lampung:Dozens of environmental activists are protesting against a coal landfill owned by Arthalyta Suryani aka Ayin in front of Regional Representatives Council of Bandar Lampung DPRD building, which they claim is a threat to the coastal ecosystems and violates rules. "The area is designated for environmentally friendly tourism. Coal deposits will make the sea water murky," said executive director of Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia (Walhi) Lampung, Hendrawan, on Wednesday. Aliansi Masyarakat Peduli Pesisir found that Ayin’s PT Sumatera Bahtera Raya to be in violation of Regional Regulation No. 10 of 2012 on Spatial and Regional Planning of Bandar Lampung. The stockpile warehouse is located on Jalan Yos Sudarso. "The area is not designated for port and industrial activities," he said. Aliansi Masyarakat Peduli Pesisir, which consists of Walhi, Mitra Bentala, Lakra, Agra, LBH, and a number of other organizations, also visited the Regional Representatives Council of Bandar Lampung. They questioned the permit issued to the company owned by Ayin. "Anyone who violates rules and isn’t licensed should be dealt with firmly. It should not be selective," he said. Antoniyus Cahyalana of the Lembaga Advokasi Rakyat suspects collusion between employers and the local government. This can be seen in the two scripts of Regulation No. 10 of 2011. "It’s very strange if a local law that was discussed for days by the executives and the legislatives could result in two versions. The change is likely to facilitate the permit,'' he said. Speaker of DPRD of Bandar Lampung has promised to investigate PT Sumatera Bahtera Raya’s license. He also expressed his surprise at the dual regulation on spatial and regional plan. "Let the police investigate the two versions of the regional regulation. I heard they’re already handling the case," he said. NUROCHMAN ARRAZIE
