40 Million Taxpayers Not Paying Tax
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Director General of Taxes Fuad Rahmany says that of 55 million individual taxpayers, only 9 million diligently pay taxes. "That means that 40 million still have not paid their taxes," said Fuad in a presentation to inform representatives of high school students throughout Indonesia about taxes at the Hajj Dorm, held at Pondok Gede on Sunday.
As for corporate taxpayers, from 12 million only 500,000 are paying taxes. Fuad explained that the directorate general of taxes continues to disseminate information on tax to boost revenues from taxes. He stressed the importance of tax revenues for people's welfare to build infrastructure and encourage the economic development of Indonesia.
In addition to distributing more information, Fuad confirmed that his office is developing a data collection mechanism associated with the financial transactions of ministries, agencies and business entities. Such information, Fuad said, would help his directorate cross check tax data.
"It's beginning to work but we need more information. We're working with Telkom and Depkominfo," he said.
Going forward, the directorate will also continue to improve its existing information technology systems to support the need to cross check tax information. "For example, an entrepreneur gets another project from a ministry, we’re not aware of it, he doesn’t report it to us, but with information technology (IT), in the future, we’ll know about it. When can ask, ‘You’re involved in this project, how come you never reported it?’” he said, explaining how the new system would operate.
