Yudhoyono Eyes Beef from Australia
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono shall meet with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and discussions on the table will include the possibility of importing beef from Australia. “This partnership is important because we have increasing demand of beef,” he said at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force base before departing to Darwin, on Monday, July 2.
The president also plans to invite businessmen in Australia to invest in livestock industry in Indonesia. He promises supports from central and regional governments. The investment is expected to help improve the quality of livestock industry in Indonesia. “Importing beef for a long term is not fit with our strategy to build food security,” he said.
Four regional heads came together with the president. They are Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika, East Nusa Tenggara Governor Frans Lebu Raya,West Nusa Tenggara Governor Zainul Majdi, and West Papua Governor Abraham Oktavianus Atururi. They were invited because their areas have great potentials for beef industry.
The president and Gillard will also talk about the possibility for infrastructure and non-oil and gas projects, especially for eastern Indonesia. “This area is our main focus,” he said.
