Problem Dodges Questions on a Car Gift
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Democrat Party general chairman Anas Urbaningrum refused to address allegations of accepting gifts from the winning bidder of the Hambalang project, PT Adhi Karya and PT Wijaya Karya. "I don’t recollect all (questions of investigators)," he said after being questioned at the KPK building, Wednesday, June 27.
When reporters asked him again about the luxury car as a gift, Anas answered curtly: "You and your questions."
After that, Anas left the KPK office escorted by dozens of Democrat cadres and officials. Former Democrat Party treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin once said that one of the cars that Anas used, a Toyota Harrier, was a gift from PT Adhi Karya and PT Wijaya Karya through Atthiyah Laila, his wife.
Anas repeatedly denied taking bribes in a sports center project in Bukit Hambalang, Bogor. He even challenged people to hang him on the National Monument (Monas) if convicted of receiving money from the project. On Wednesday, June 27, Anas also said he knew nothing at all about the project.
Nazaruddin, who has been sentenced to 4 years and 10 months imprisonment in the case of Athletes Complex, claimed that funds to the tune of Rp100 billion flowed to the Democrat Convention, allegedly to ensure Anas’ winning the party chair seat. Based on this claim, KPK investigators asked Anas to explain the financial resources of the Democrat Party. His response was, "There was no such thing (no money received from Adhi Karya)."
At the trials on the Athlete Complex bribery case in the Corruption Court, a number of witnesses said that Anas had received three cars (Toyota Alphard, Camry, and the Harrier) from Group Permai, Nazaruddin’s company. The gifts, said Nazaruddin, were because the actual owner of the Permai Group was Anas. Through the Group, many government projects were won by companies that teamed up with Nazaruddin.
Anas denied that he was Permai Group owner. "Ah, especially that, that’s a lie," he said.
