The Reason Umar Patek Canceled Plans to Appeal
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Umar Patek’s laywer Asludin Hatjani said that his client canceled his intention to appeal the verdict. Umar Patek was sentenced 20 years in prison last week. “He and his family had a discussion, and later told me that the appeal is not necessary,” Asluddin said on the phone on Wednesday, June 27. According to Asludin, there were two reasons behind the cancellation. First, Umar felt guilty for being involved in the Bali bombing. “He wants to be responsible for taking part in the bomb making, although it was only a small part.” Second, Umar felt guilty for not trying to stop the tragedy. “He blamed himself and regretted it.” ELLIZA HAMZAH
