TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The hardline Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) was one of those angered over TV comedian and presenter Olga Syahputra’s alleged “folly” at the Pesbukers program on ANTV private television channel. When actress Julia Perez responded to a caller at the show with Assalamualaikum, which is a typical Islamic greeting, Olga who was seated near Julia, said: “Assalamualaikum again! You sound just like one of those beggars.” FPI official Salim Alatas expressed his displeasure at the comedian-cum-presenter. "People’s greetings shouldn’t be referred to as a greeting made by beggars. I think Olga should study religion in more depth," he said sternly when contacted, Tuesday, June 26, 2012. Salim acknowledges a person has the right to crack jokes. But he called for boundaries to be established. Especially, he said, since Olga’s jokes touched on religious matters. "When joking, there should be limits. Don’t ever belittle anything. It is worse when you discredit religion," he said. "The greeting is a prayer and a blessing. Why liken the greeter to a beggar?" Olga was reprimanded by the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission for discrediting religion in the live broadcast of the Antv program aired on June 19, 2012. YAZIR FAROUK
