Former Romanian Prime Minister Shot Himself
TEMPO Interactive, Bucharest:Former Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase shot and injured himself in a suicide attempt on Wednesday evening. The attempt was made a couple hours after the country’s supreme court sentenced him to two years in prison for graft. Local media reported that the former minister shot himself in the neck.
Nastase will become the most senior Romanian politician to be sent to prison after the fall of communism in 1989. Nastase was sent to jail for illegally collecting funds for his failed presidential campaign. The Supreme Court substantiated the rulings made by other courts.
The court has sent a signal to the EU to curb endemic corruption in the region. The East European legal system is currently being scrutinized for its close links to the government.
