Shahabuddin Proposed as Pakistani PM
TEMPO Interactive, Islamabad: Makhdoom Shahabuddin, a former assistant during Benazir Bhutto’s administration, has been named Pakistani prime minister.
The decision—made by President Asif Ali Zardari—to promote the Textile Minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin was made after the dismissal of prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani by the Supreme Court. Gilani refused to ask the Swiss government to reveal alleged graft practices committed by President Zardari.
Makhdoom Shahabuddin was a close assistant to former prime minister
Benazhir Buhtto and Yusuf Raza Gilani. President President Zardari is
expected to seek approval for his decision from the Pakistani parliament on Friday, local media on Wednesday.
The Supreme Court disqualified Prime Minister Gilani on Tuesday, two months after the Pakistan High Court issued a ruling that the prime minister had committed insult for refusing to file a request to the Swiss government to reveal graft practices allegedly committed by President Zardari.
