KPK Arrests American National in Bribery Act
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Indonesia’s Antigraft Commission (KPK) on Wednesday evening arrested an American national in the act of allegedly handing over more than a Rp100 million in bribe money to a top Jakarta airport official. KPK spokesman Johan Budi SP identified the American national only as Andrew, and the airport official as Wahono, chief of Duties and Excise at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The bribe was reportedly being paid to secure the full release of Andrew’s household and office goods which had been stuck at the airport customs for months due to clearance problems. “There are at least seven other people arrested in separate locations, along with both [Wahono and Andrew],” Johan told reporters on Wednesday night at the KPK headquarters in South Jakarta. Wahono, and two men identified as Edi and A’an were arrested at the cargo warehouse area of the duties and excise division at Soekarno-Hatta airport. Four others, namely Andrew, Roy, a security officer and a driver were arrested at a rest and gas stop Area 13 of the Jakarta-Merak road.
Andrew is believed to be the owner of a company here identified as TD Williamson Indonesia, based in Cilandak, South Jakarta. His goods, comprising of chairs, tables and beds, were stuck at customs, excise and duties of Soekarno-Hatta airport for more than four months. “During the arrest, Rp 104 million were seized as evidence from ‘A’’s [Andrew] possession,” Johan said.
