KPK Investigates Religious Ministry Officials over Quranic Book Scandal
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Antigraft Commission chief Abraham Samad on Wednesday said that his officers were investigating strong indications of corruption within the Religious Ministry, involving the procurement of Al-Quran holy books. “It shall head for the second stages of investigation soon,” Abraham said on Wednesday. He explained that the graft indications were coming from the Ministry’s Directorate-General for Islamic Studies, which is currently being led by Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs, Nazaruddin Umar. KPK deputy Bambang Widjojanto said that the identities of the Ministry officers being investigated could not be revealed as yet, and the same goes for the amount corrupted.
Separately, KPK official K.M.S. Romi has said that this case once again proved how rooted the practices of corruption were in state institutions, including those responsible for the spread of moral values linked to religion. “Even [procurement of] the holy book is being corrupted. Corruption is therefore occurring not just in bureaucratic circles or the House of Representatives, or involving massive state projects,” Romi said. “Even officers, who were T-shirts with the mark of the Al-Quran on them, are suspected corruptors of the holy book.”
