Store Manager Faces Court for Selling Irshad Manji Books
TEMPO Interactive, Kuala Lumpur:A store manager is being tried at the Malaysia Sharia High Court for allegedly breaking the law by distributing Irshad Manji books. Manji is a Canadian writer who some believe violate Islamic laws and whose books are banned in Malaysia. Nik Raina Nik Abdul Aziz, 36, has been accused of distributing Manji’s book, titled Allah, Liberty and Love, The Courage to Reconcile Faith and Freedom, which has been translated into Malay. Nik Raina Nik Abdul Aziz faces the charges because the store manager sold the books at Borders bookstore owned by Berjaya Buku Sdn Bhd, on the third floor of Garden Mall on May 23. Nik Raina Nik Abdul Aziz is facing a maximum fine of RM3,000 or a two-year sentence or both, based on Article 13 paragraph 1 of the 1997 Federal Law on Sharia Violation if the defendant is found guilty.
