Batam Island Secure Following Riots
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution said that the situation in Batam was finally conducive, following rioting outside Batam’s Hotel Planet Holiday on Monday. "The situation is already conducive. Public activities are back to normal," said Saud when contacted Monday, June 18, 2012.
This afternoon's riot at about 16:00 hrs was triggered by a dispute over a 3.5 hectare land at Batumerah, Batuampar, Batam. Two groups of mobs, representing PT HN and PT LWE, fought. Saud reported that PT LWE won the case following the Batam District Court's ruling. But, PT HN masses were dissatisfied with the result of the dispute and started an attack. "The masses of PT LWE made a counter-attack," said Saud. Saud said that one person died, eight were slightly injured, and two seriously hurt. According to him, 28 people had been held in custody for questioning.
