Kontras Urges SBY To Return Home to Look After Papua’s Concerns
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) urged President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who is visiting Mexico and Brazil, to immediately return home to personally oversee possible solutions to the ongoing Papua problem.
"The President had better come home one of these days to immediately set up a team to thoroughly resolve the Papuan problem," said Kontras coordinator Haris Azhar Tuesday, June 19, 2012. "Hold a dialogue with various parties," he added.
Haris doubted if the dialogue currently held by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Djoko Suyanto, would produce good results. He described Djoko as not objective enough when looking at the Papuan issue. Djoko was considered to tend to defend the apparatus in the shooting of West Papua National Committee (KNPB) top official, Mako Tabuni. "Before he heard the public view, he already defended the police," said Haris.
Haris said Djoko should have first evaluated the performance of the apparatus in safeguarding Papua. In this way, the public trust in the apparatus can be rebuilt. After that, a dialogue can be held. "What's needed today is to build the trust of the Papuan people. Then the dialogue," said Haris.
