Mandailing Cultural Institution Fights against Malaysia’s Claim
TEMPO Interactive, Medan:Claims by Malaysia over the Gordang 9 (nine drums) and Tor-tor dance has triggered reactions from the Mandailing tribal institution in North Sumatra.
Sidempuan Cultural Institution chairman Haji Saleh Salam Harahap, said that Gordang 9 musical instruments and Tor-tor dance are widely known to be native to the Batak and Mandailing tribes.
“These traditions have been around for 500 years in Mandailing,” Saleh Salam, whose noble name is Baginda Tambangan Harahap, told Tempo on Sunday.
Saleh believes the Mandailing community that live in Malaysia will also prevent Malaysia from claiming the practices as part of their national heritage.
