Govt Deploys Antiterror Detachment To Papua
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The government is scheduled to deploy the Special Anti-Terror Detachment 88 to help with reinforcing security measures in Papua. Special authority staffer at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Brig. Gen. Sumardi, said Detachment 88 would reinforce Papua's Cenderawasih Military Region Command and Police. "This is in the nature of reinforcement. The political front and conflcits in Papua is centered in Jayapura, so it needs to be reinforced," he said, Saturday, June 16, 2012 Sumardi did not know when the Detachment 88 would arrive. The government would also send a top-brass team led by Coordinating Minister for Political Affairs Djoko Suyanto to hear the reports of Kodam Cendrawasih Commander and Papua Governor. Sumardi, who was once engaged in running the special autonomy in Aceh, said the issue in Papua was complex. The shootings over there could not be interpreted merely as a political issue. "In Papua there's also the question of regional heads elections, welfare and the failure in the running the local government. The Papuan problem is not a mere political issue," he said.
