SOEs Need to Boost Efficiency, says Bank Mandiri CEO
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) need to boost efficiency, says Bank Mandiri CEO Zulkifli Zaini. “To improve growth within competitiveness,” he reiterated, met after a forum event on Thursday.
Zulkifli said that each industry has different ways of becoming more efficient. In the banking industry, for instance, he said that efficiency is achieved through integrated financial services. As such, Bank Mandiri transactions have increased by 75 percent from Rp141 trillion in the first quarter of 2011 to Rp247 trillion in the first quarter of 2012.
Financial director of the national gas company PGN, M. Riza Pahlevi, said efficiency has enabled the company to monitor daily payments while PGN partners can easily conduct transactions.
SOEs Minister Dahlan Iskan said that overspending by state enterprises could be handled. “The problem is not that we can or cannot do it, it’s whether we want to do it or not,” said the minister.
Economist Sven Smit said that efficiency must be applied so that Indonesian companies can become globally competitive. Smit estimated that global revenues per capita would continue to grow. Revenues in 2020 are expected to be 40-percent higher than in 2000.
