Bandi, 13, Spends a Month in Jail over Petty Theft
TEMPO Interactive, Banyuwangi:A 13-year-old boy sat weakly in the defendant's seat at the Banyuwangi District Court. The prosecuting attorney Agus Suraharta had just sought a two-month jail term for Bandi.
The trial on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 was quickly conducted. The panel of judges read out their indictment. Bandi appeared relieved when the judge passed on him a one-month jail sentence. This meant that in two more days, on June 15, 2012, he would be released from the Banyuwangi Penitentiary. "I promise I won't commit the deed any more," said the poor boy to the judge.
Bandi, a resident of Siliragung Subdistrict, twice sat in the defendant's seat on charges of stealing a three-kilogram gas canister and a well pulley worth Rp 20 thousand from his aunt Siti Arofah.
Bandi comes from a broken home. When only a year old, he was abandoned by his parents who went to Malaysia to work. Bandi had to live with his old and poor grandfather and grandmother.
